The Nights Since That Evening

Far too many nights since that evening
Far too many embers still smoldering
Left to the wolves with the wind only echoing
Hearts in their hands like cloaks all fluttering

Far too many nights since that evening
Far too many agonies left festering
Nowhere to run but into that suffering
Nothing left but to endure without seething

Far too many nights since that evening
Far too many faces yet leering
What would they give for eyes that were smiling
Instead they find a moon draped in mourning

Far too many nights since that evening
Far too many days full of dissembling
Poisoned promises on red lips teasing
Wishes struggle like a madman gleaming

Far too many nights since that evening
Far too many dreams left drowning
What can the dead say to us still living
What can they do but leave our masks burning
